It was January, 1974. We landed in a city with streets covered in snow, trees bare of leaves, its sky grey. It was a shocking contrast to Nairobi’s towering eucalypti, green lawns and bougainvillea covered in brilliant sunshine.
As we left the aircraft we bid farewell to a motherly flight attendant who had stopped to chat to us a few times during the flight and somehow made me feel that in choosing Air Canada I had taken a small step towards becoming Canadian. If everybody was as friendly as the flight attendant then we had nothing to fear.
