Written by DAILY NEWS Reporter: TRAVELLING in Mnolela village in Lindi Rural district of Lindi region recently revealed the impact of ruralurban migration in the area.
At a village meeting to mark the annual Farmers’ Field Day, an Aga Khan Foundation’s (AKF) annual initiative where farmers from neighbouring areas visit well-performing farmers’ fields using good practices, the over 100 farmers who attended were mainly women and the elderly.
A brief tour of the village’s town centre also revealed the same because, due to extreme poverty, the youth are forced to run away from the village to cities like Dar es Salaam for a greener pastures in turn creating more poverty for the village for lack of productive labour force.
Upon research, AKF embarked on a project that will help turn the tide. In 2009 AKF, through its Coastal Rural Support Programme Tanzania CRSP(T), launched a Food Security and Incomes Project with the aim of improving agriculture and market access for people living in Lindi and Mtwara.
