In South Asia and particularly Pakistan, too many mothers die due to excessive bleeding during pregnancy, delivery or after childbirth. Timely transfusion can help save the lives of nearly three-quarters of these women and the role of regular volunteer donors can prove pivotal in this regard, experts said at a public awareness session on blood donation held at the Aga Khan University Hospital on Wednesday. According to the National Committee for Maternal and Neonatal Health, childbirth associated bleeding accounts for about 27 percent of all maternal deaths in the country. “Blood transfusion is a lifesaving intervention which plays a central role in patient management. The entire process – from collection to the actual transfusion – must be flawless,” said Dr Farheen Mahar, a consultant haematologist.
