GIUSEPPE VALIANTE | QMI AGENCY – OTTAWA β The Conservative government literally rolled out the red carpet Thursday to welcome an uber-wealthy Muslim leader who is widely viewed as moderate and warm to the West.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper even gave the Aga Khan, spiritual leader to the world’s 15 million Shia Ismaili Muslims, the rare honour to speak in the House of Commons to a room full of Senators and MPs.
Harper had nothing but gushing words in introducing the Aga Khan, who he said worked “tirelessly for tolerance and pluralism.”
“When you are in Canada you are home,” Harper said.
The Aga Khan and the Canadian government have worked jointly on building the Aga Khan Foundation Canada, located in Ottawa, which works to promote maternal and childhood development.
