via nation.co.ke – Volunteers from the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), Lions Club of Kenya and locals Monday planted 11,000 trees in the Mount Kenya forest.
This is part of an initiative that is contributing to the government of Kenya’s goal of achieving a 10 per cent forest cover by 2030.
The trees were planted in portions of land in the forest where the Kenya Wildlife Service and the local community have an initiative in which residents living next to the forest are given of land to cultivate while taking care of the trees until they mature.
This normally takes a period of three years.
Speaking at the event, Senior Director of the Aga Khan Foundation Mr David Boyer said that they have been involved in similar initiatives but their main goal is to provide economic livelihood benefits for the community.
“We know that through such initiatives, water is conserved and hydroelectricity connection will progress since environmental conservation is key to economic development,” he said.
