DUSHANBE (TCA) — The geography and topography of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan make them high-risk countries for natural disasters. Especially it is relevant to the isolated mountainous communities of Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) in Tajikistan and Alai and Chon Alai in Kyrgyzstan, which are subject to frequent hazards such as Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), avalanches, landslides and earthquakes.
In order to reduce the risk to these mountainous communities and increase response capacity, Focus Humanitarian Assistance (FOCUS) with financial support from the European Commission’s Department for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO) under its Disaster Preparedness Program (DIPECHO VII) grant award recently completed an 18-month disaster risk management project, press release issued by FOCUS said.
