H.H. Aga Khan School Babati (Lake Manyara region), Tanzania in the mid 1950’s

H.H. Aga Khan School Babati (Lake Manyara region), Tanzania in the mid 1950'sExcerpt: For many years His Highness the Aga Khan III, Sir Sultan Mahomed Shah, had been funding numerous institutions for social and economic development on the Indian sub-continent and in East Africa. During his 72 years as Imamat (1885-1957), the communities celebrated his Golden (1937), Diamond (1946) and Platinum (1954) Jubilees. To show their appreciation and affection, the Ismailis weighed their Imam in gold, diamonds and, symbolically, in platinum, respectively, the proceeds of which were used to further develop major social welfare and development institutions in Asia and Africa. Those involved in social welfare included in the programme the accelerated development of schools and community centres. How it was done I don’t know but the necessary funding for the school was acquired from these proceeds.

With the three necessities in place work was started on converting the duka into a school, purchasing equipment, enrolling children and finding one or two teaching assistants. On its opening, I presume in early 1956, it was named ‘His Highness the Aga Khan School, Babati’.
