Iqbal Noor Ali has been with the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) for over 30 years. In 1979, he joined an economic development unit of the AKDN as a Project Officer for a programme that enabled over 800 immigrant families acquire or establish small businesses. As the CEO of Aga Khan Foundation USA from 1984 to 2009, he helped set up the AKDN’s presence in the United States through engagement with government and private sector donors and development institutions, and established a nation-wide volunteer network to raise public awareness and funds.
In 2010, he was promoted to Senior Advisor in the AKDN to facilitate strategic partnerships and international representation on behalf of all 10 AKDN agencies. He has served on the Boards and Committees of various philanthropic and development organisations. A U.S. citizen, Iqbal received his formal education in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Canada, and resides in Washington, D.C.
Founded and guided by His Highness the Aga Khan, the AKDN is a group of development agencies that work in health, education, architecture, culture, microfinance, rural development, disaster prevention and mitigation, the environment, the promotion of private-sector enterprise and the revitalisation of historic cities. The AKDN works in over 30 countries, mainly in South and Central Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. It employs approximately 80,000 people, the majority of whom are based in developing countries. The AKDN disburses approximately USD600 million annually for non-profit activities.
