Governmental girl school in the Eraq valley, Shibar district, Afghanistan, on October 12, 2009. With the support of countries such as Canada the teachers have been trained by the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN). In Afghanistan, of the more than 6.2 million children who now attend school, one third of them are girls. With the support of countries such as Canada, investing in the education of girls will help in so many ways, to strengthen their voice in the community; improve literacy rates; improve maternal health; and also strengthen their political participation.
