Carleton University has recognized acclaimed Canadian writer M. G. Vassanji with a Doctor of Fine Arts, honoris causa, in recognition of his literary achievements and the promotion of international understanding and discourse. Vassanji is the author of seven novels, two collections of short stories, a travel memoir about India and a biography of Mordecai Richler. His work has appeared in various countries and in several languages. He is winner of the Giller Prize, the Governor General’s Prize, the Harbourfront Festival Prize, the Commonwealth First Book Prize and the Bressani Prize.

During his Convocation address, Vassanji did not offer up easy answers to the difficult decisions students will face. He spoke from his experience and from the heart, telling graduates that what comes next is up to them and the path they choose will not be easy or clearly defined.
