As a young medical graduate in Pakistan, Dr. Zulfiqar Bhutta wrote to a college in England and asked an apparently ridiculous question: do you have any training opportunities for a Pakistani doctor interested in newborn medicine?
“They wrote back in a very condescending note,” Bhutta recently recalled in a telephone interview. “(They said) there were no opportunities like this for their own graduates, let alone someone in Pakistan.
“That made me doubly determined to do something about it.”
Thirty-five years later, that stubborn determination remains a defining feature of Bhutta’s career as he takes up his new role as co-director and research head of the Global Child Health centre at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children.
