Tucked in a corner of the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) is a rosewood and ebony cabinet inlaid with ivory floral motifs from the 17th century, believed to be part of the Mughal court during the reign of Emperor Shah Jahan.
The 45cm-long rare cabinet is now part of the ACM’s permanent gallery, thanks to Mr Aziz Merchant and his wife, Dr Reshma, who contributed an undisclosed amount to acquire the artefact. The duo were recently conferred the Patron of Heritage Awards – an award by the National Heritage Board to recognise cultural and heritage philanthropists whose donations are between $1 million and $1,999,999.
The Merchants don’t want to reveal the cabinet’s actual value but they raved about its beauty and stunning intricacy.
“If you look closely at the cabinet, the motifs are very similar to those that are found on the Taj Mahal,” pointed out Mr Merchant, 48.
