Arafat Jamal has been appointed as the new Chief of the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) Secretariat, starting Monday 20 February 2012.
Arafat has extensive humanitarian experience in the field and at headquarters in Geneva. He is currently the Deputy Representative of UNHCR in Jordan. Arafat previously served with UNHCR HQ in Geneva (External Relations) (1993-1996); UNHCR Afghanistan (1996-1998); UNHCR HQ in Geneva (Operational Policy Officer) (1999-2003); UNHCR HQ in Geneva (Special Assistant to Assistant High Commissioner) (2003-2005); and Lebanon (2005–2008),
Arafat holds a Master of Science in Refugee and Forced Migration Studies from the University of Oxford’s Refugee Studies Centre. He also has degrees in History as well as Urban and Regional Studies from Cornell University, USA. In addition, He has published a series of articles on refugee situations and protection.
Arafat is married with two daughters.
