The multi-million dollar Bujagali hydropower project will officially be inaugurated next month, an official has said. Dr Kevin Kariuki, the head of Infrastructure IPS (k) Ltd – an infrastructure and industrial development arm of AKFED – said on Saturday that the plant will be inaugurated by President Museveni on October 8.
The plant added 250MW, its full capacity, onto the national grid in June this year, doubling Uganda’s electricity supply. The $860m Bujagali hydropower project was commissioned on a unit by unit basis in response to energy ministry’s strategic decision to replace the expensive thermal power generation at the earliest date and minimise load-shedding.
