Aga Khan Foundation’s World Partnership Walk raises $2 million from Vancouver

Aga Khan Foundation’s World Partnership Walk raises $2 million from VancouverWhen Shirin Chatur moved to Uganda with her husband in 1994, she didn’t know what was in store for her — until the Aga Khan Foundation gave her a call.

“When you look at things happening in the third world, you realize they really don’t have anything,” said Chatur, who opened the foundation’s first office. During her four years in Uganda she focused on school upgrades, guiding money from donors into tangible education projects for children in the country.

“A small bit of money makes a huge impact on the communities there,” she said.

Now a paralegal in Vancouver, Chatur was one of thousands in Stanley Park on Sunday for the foundation’s World Partnership Walk, Canada’s largest annual fundraising effort against global poverty.

“Some people find it a little difficult to ask for money, and I always say you’re not asking money for yourself,” said Chatur, who has led the law firm Fasken-Martineau-Dumoulin in fundraising for the walk the past eight years. “And it’s such a good cause, you shouldn’t feel uncomfortable.”
