Nine young Mississaugans are being recognized this week for community service and character building with the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.
Jacqueline Chan, Kaitlyn D’Agostino, Travis DeWolf, Georgina Evison, Michael Ferrarelli, Aidan O’Sullivan, Mehwish Panjwani, Roxalana Tkachenko and Meredith Webb — all age 16 to 24 — will be presented with the award by David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, at a ceremony in Toronto on Wednesday.
• Chan managed a boys’ rugby team and is student council president at Tomken Rd. Public School.
• D’Agostino is a snowboard instructor assistant and wrote two short stories published by Chicken Soup for the Soul.
• DeWolf is a nursing home volunteer and taught English in Japan.
• Evison is a day-care volunteer and teaching assistant.
• Ferrarelli is a cadet leader of the 188 Cobra Air Cadet Squadron.
• O’Sullivan volunteered at the Living Arts Centre and the Mississauga Food Bank.
• Panjwani is a member of the Ismaili Volunteer Corps and the Mississauga Youth Advisory Committee and helped build a school in Nairobi, Kenya.
