When our eldest daughter first told us several years ago that she wanted to run for Grade 4 class president, we were somewhat surprised. We knew she had a competitive streak, but we didn’t expect that, at nine years old, she would express any interest in taking part in her class popularity contest.
Nevertheless, as parents we tried to say and do all the right things, telling our daughter how proud we were of her and crossing our fingers. We wanted to support her interest in doing something different and teach her that life wasn’t all about winning but about having the courage to try. I never expected to be teaching these lessons in the context of the peculiar world of politics at an all-girls elementary school.
