Juggling her roles as a full-time businesswoman and the volunteer president of a high-profile international women’s organization has not come without its fair share of challenges. “There are times when I cannot devote the proper energy to my business, and of course when family issues arise and I’m speaking abroad, I’m not able to be immediately present to help. Yet, my philosophy has always underscored placing the needs of society over my own,” Almas Jiwani explains.
In 2011, Almas brought the message of UN Women Canada to international audiences, including 200 parliamentarians from over 38 countries at COPA and FIPA, and most recently in Abu Dhabi where she presented a keynote address on the issue of women’s economic welfare.
This year’s UN Women Canada luncheon at the Rideau Club drew the attention of many notable Canadians and initiated the support of the former Governor General of Canada, The Right Honorable Michaelle Jean; the UN Women Executive Director; the Minister of Status of Women; Justin Trudeau; and Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau. Having garnered such widespread support, Almas will continue to lead UN Women Canada as they grow in 2012. “While we certainly have a long way to go in eliminating gender inequality globally, I am confident that this will one day be a reality. With the tenacity our team has shown, and the ongoing support of sponsors, I am thrilled to get started on the important work that UN Women Canada has in store for 2012,” says Almas.
