The Dallas Partnership Walk, which I’ve participated in since it came to the area 13 years ago, is an initiative of the Aga Khan Foundation USA. The organizers say the goal is to raise awareness and money to help reduce poverty, hunger, illiteracy and poor health in undeveloped countries.
Special emphasis over the years has been on providing clean drinking water in rural areas, quality education (especially for girls) and empowering communities to govern themselves.
The Giving USA Foundation report shows that giving to international causes proved to have one of the largest increases in funding, growing by 13.5 percent over the previous year. The Partnership Walk is indicative of that trend.
Chairman Nick Jivani announced that Saturday’s walk generated $630,000, a golf tournament brought in $220,000 and an additional $60,000 was raised by Prince Hussain Aga Khan’s photo exhibit held in conjunction with the event.
The Dallas area walk is one of nine in the country, and every dollar raised goes directly to the cause. Not one dime is spent on administration, the organizers proudly proclaim.
We are entering what is traditionally called the season of giving. I urge you to join your neighbors in supporting those individuals and organizations you deem worthy.
