Waja Karimdad’s murder | DAWN.COM

It was just after Iftari, my car had detoured and I found myself on the main road of Kharadar, one of the most congested streets of the old town where tankers, trailers and heavy goods trucks are lined up and stacked two per side of the two-lane road. Here at the edge of one side of the road was a 10-foot clearance in an urban jungle where we spotted the grey-haired 69-year-old man.

He, along with his granddaughter and a colleague, had camped out on three plastic chairs next to an open manhole that I estimated was five feet deep. We stopped and sat beside him for the next 15 minutes.

In answer to what he was doing there, Waja smiled and said he wanted to make sure that nobody would fall in the manhole.

It was his daily evening routine to sit on this spot working with other volunteers who helped people cross the street to the Aga Khan Jamaat Khana. We then chatted about the old town and the golden days and the people who once lived there.

  1. Thouhg he was a good devoted Khidmatgar, but his murder was political one, within the PPP two groups are working to hold the Lyari vote bank, and Waja was supporting one group.

His murder should not been seen as Khidmatgar murder but a political devoted work murder.

    1. @ sultan Khemani: Waja Ahmed Karimdad Shaheed was a born khidmatgar and he never discriminated people by their cast or political associations. He helped every one and he didn’t took sides of any group. He didn’t need any assistance from any body about Lyari matters. Every group respected him because he was a brilliant, peace loving and helping persons. He always fought for rights of poor people. His cold blooded murder is due to his efforts to bring peace in Lyari and neighbour hood. And please, if you don’t know anything about him then do not try to comment about him. He was a very respectable and honest politician and good human being. May Allah Bless him. Aa’meen!
