East African Community secretary general Dr. Richard Sezibera has called on the Community to work closely with the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) in the areas of education, research and health care.
Dr. Sezibera made the statement here on Thursday when speaking with His Highness the Aga Khan, chairman of AKDN, when he paid a courtesy call on the secretary general.
He briefed EAC officials about several ongoing AKDN projects in East Africa, including the inauguration of a USD 50 million
Aga Khan University (AKU) Hospital’s Heart and Cancer Centre on Monday in Nairobi, the laying of a foundation stone for the AKU Graduate School of Media and Communications in Nairobi on Wednesday, and the ongoing construction of a modern university campus in Arusha.
Dr. Sezibera hailed the Aga Khan for conceptualizing the University of East Africa campus in Arusha which, he said, would contribute to the creation of an East African identity.
“Your vision is very exciting and compelling and we [the East African Community] support these noble objectives meant to develop the region as a unit,” he said.
The two sides agreed to form a coordinating team to explore further the areas of collaboration between AKDN and the EAC.
