February 10, 2010 – With just two months to plan and pull off the luncheon Three Cups of Tea with Greg Mortenson, how did chairs Susan Boggio, Sultana Mangalji and Ping Sun make the Central Asia Institute fundraiser a wildly successful sellout?

Besides tapping Joanne King Herring as honorary chair, the trio enlisted an executive committee whose members lent not just their high-profile names but their tireless efforts: Betty Adam, Franci Crane, Françoise Djerejian, Sima Ladjevardian, Tehmina Masud, Anne Mendelsohn, Nidhika Mehta, Sabiha Rehmatulla, Lois Stark, Ellen Susman, Diana Untermeyer, Aline Wilson and Faranak Zafarnia.

Mortenson, the author of Three Cups of Tea and Stones into Schools, drove home his message that community-based education, especially for girls, in remote parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan is the long-term solution to peace in the region. It was an easy sell for the crowd of educated, empowered women that filled the InterContinental Hotel ballroom to capacity.
