Zul Kapadia (WCAS13) developed an interest in Chinese culture long before arriving at Northwestern. That is to say, he was really into kung pao chicken and Jackie Chan movies. Now, inspired and challenged by outstanding faculty at the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, Kapadia is a serious Chinese scholar who took third place at the Midwest Chinese Speech Competition.
Northwestern’s community of donors recently provided Kapadia with an unforgettable experience, as he was awarded a fellowship through the Posner Summer Fellowship Program. Supported by the generosity of trustee Brian Posner (WCAS03), the program provides summer research funds for students early in their academic careers (typically freshmen and sophomores) who come from underrepresented groups.
Zul Kapadia’s near future plans are that he will be on a full time research team that looks at institutional capacity to deal with immigrants around various cities in the U.S. Also, next summer he is going to be traveling to Beijing to study at Pecking University (Beda). It is the equivalent of Harvard for the U.S. He is doing a two month study abroad. On campus, Zul is the captain of Northwestern’s Mock Trial team. His majors are Political Science and Chinese and minors are legal studies and film. On Saturday, Dec 11th he is traveling to Costa Rica to work in the jungles of San Juan, Costa Rica. Zul will be helping disadvantaged children and single mother homes. He will be teaching English, assisting administrators, and giving guidance to clients. Zul is on Northwestern Scholarship program.
