Treasures of the Aga Khan Museum in Turkey

Treasures of the Aga Khan Museum

From November 5th 2010 to February 27th 2011, the Aga Khan Museum collection is visiting the Sakip Sabanci Museum in Istanbul, Turkey. Entitled Treasures of the Aga Khan Museum, the exhibition is held within the framework of Istanbul 2010 – European Capital of Culture. For the first time since Parma in 2007, the artefacts on display are not a general presentation of “highlights” from the collection, but it is an exhibition that brings together examples of the written word on a variety of objects (ceramics, wood, metalwork, textiles, etc.) with their counterparts on parchment and paper. The exhibition aims to show how the art of the book – in calligraphy, illumination and illustration – evolved over time in the Islamic world.

  1. Seeing these pieces, is deeply calming yet invigorating. I cannot wait to see these pieces in person inshallah. I recognise a couple of pieces from Prince Sadruddin’s collection in NY. In this fast paced environment, I am happy you were able to present this as a quick peek and short news to us. Perhaps the curator at the IIS can give more information about these pieces. Maybe there is a book we might be able to purchase to relax with before bed, for peace and spiritual inspiration also rings through art form.
