Vali Jamal: Letters – Road upsets Diaspora Ugandan Asians

Writing from a jam-free Vancouver, Canada, the article, A walk on Kampala’s worst road (Daily Monitor, October 21), brought back bitter-sweet memories of not long ago.

I used to drive on that road, shall I just say, business, on Kampala Road, opposite City Square (Constitution Square) for three years (2005-08). Those depressions were more like pot-valleys, pot-craters or pot-lakes.

It was either that or Bombo Road. If I hit that road between 8 am and 10 am, I could be in a jam stretching all the way from the Pentecostal/Odeon junction to Bat Valley.

The fact is that there are 30 times more cars on Kampala’s roads today than in 1972

  1. Hi Vali: Pleased to see your blog here. As I said to you, I and Jyoti were in Kampala in December. I deeply regret not contacting you earlier. It would have been possible to find your email if I had been better organised than I was. However, it was great to be in Kampala. We stayed at Golf Course Hotel and went around the city revisiting places old and new. In last 40 years the city has changed so much and its African character is both striking and pleasing. Our meeting with Mahmood Mamdani at the Makerere Institute of Social Research was most enjoyable as was our walk around the campus. I went to Social Sciences Faculty building and found that Sociology was still on the ground floor. Of course now I do not know anyone there. However, there was someone who still remembered Peter Riby who headed the Department in the late 60s and early 70s. Unfortunately there was no time for detailed exploration of current state of play either at the University or among the Indians in Kampala. I noted that the extent of obvious urban poverty and destitution and homelessness were not there and there was a buzz that reflected activity and adequate resources for urban living. We had a great time and I do wish we had met you. Sorry!!
