Carleton student – Rahim Bhimani – solves stinky shoe problem

A Carleton University student has found a way to take the stench out of sport, literally. He might even be a saviour to mothers whose nasal passages are constantly filled with the aroma of smelly shoes.

Rahim Bhimani, 23, even has a punchy slogan for the Ultraviolet Sports Pack (UVSP) — “the product that severs the link between sport and smell.”

The UVSP uses ultraviolet light to kill athletes’ shoe bacteria and the resulting odour. It’s one of 20 finalists for the 2010 James Dyson Award, an international award, worth about $31,900, aimed at encouraging and inspiring young design engineers.

Bhimani, a fourth-year industrial design student, said he was going to create a shoe dryer but, after speaking with athletes, he realized that wet shoes were not their main concern
