‘Graves and ashes of our ancestors. Untended.’ – Viva! East Africa

The following verse is inspired by ‘Coming to the UK’, written by Charles de Souza (reproduced below).

Leaving Uganda
Vali Jamal, Vancouver, Sunday, August 22, 2010

Graves and ashes of our ancestors.
Untended.
Times desecrated to make room for homes.
Fragrant breezes from the lake
Hilltop bungalows
Dukas factories and farms.
Was it always to be so
For People in the Middle?
Coolies to colonial masters
Exploiter wa-dukas to Africans.
And that we just wouldn’t integrate
Marry and live in villages?
