Badakhshan – a northern Afghan province sandwiched between Tajikistan, Pakistan and China – was hit last spring with unprecedented rainfall. Landslides swept away part of a vital water supply system, built to serve 21 villages in the district of Jurm. With taps running
dry, families had to hunt for springs or risk drinking river water.
