Friday Afternoon Lecture: The Light of the Sufis: The Mystical Arts of Islam

Friday, May 14, 1:30 p.m. and repeated on Saturday, May 15, 4:00 p.m.

The Light of the Sufis: The Mystical Arts of Islam

Presented by Dr. Ladan Akbarnia, Executive Director, Iran Heritage Foundation, London; Hagop Kevorkian Associate Curator of Islamic Art, Brooklyn Museum; and curator of the exhibition Light of the Sufis

Sufism is generally defined as Islamic mysticism. Although its roots lie in orthodox Islam, the inclusive and fluid nature of Sufism gives it broad appeal. Followers seek oneness with God, the mystical union that brings enlightenment through the chance to know God on an intimate level, ultimately surrounding the believer with divine light. Dr. Ladan Akbarnia shows how the objects in the exhibition Light of the Sufis reflect both literal and figural expressions of important Sufi ideas and practices.

Promotional support for the May and June Friday and Saturday Afternoon Lectures related to the exhibition Light of the Sufis: The Mystical Arts of Islam is generously provided by His Highness Prince Aga Khan Shia Imami Ismaili Council for the Southwestern United States.
