This is the last of six profiles of this year’s recipients of the Courage to Come Back Awards. The awards recognize those who have overcome great adversity to help others. The recipients will be honoured at a gala dinner at Vancouver’s Hyatt Regency Hotel on May 6. Today’s recipient is in the youth category.
Fahreen Mapara’s list of her favourite things goes like this: school, friends, martial arts and her mom.
The 10-year-old’s most immediate goal is to be able to do the splits.
She sings in the choir, rides her bike, volunteers with new Canadians at school, listens to her iPod and plays a mean recorder.
The only thing distinguishing the Pitt Meadows girl from any of her classmates at Davie Jones Elementary School is the breathing tube attached to her neck.
Fahreen was born six weeks early and was diagnosed with tracheoesophageal fistula, meaning that her airway and the tube for swallowing food were linked.
