Sadrudin Virani, National Forest Authority, to set up Shs 10 Billion timber institute in Uganda

Steven Otage – 14 December 2009

The National Forestry Authority and Virco Holdings have partnered to set up a timber institute at Nakawa. The first batch of students will be admitted in March 2010 to train timber specialists.

Speaking at a cocktail party after the signing ceremony at Serena Hotel, the Virco Holdings Managing Director Sadrudin Virani, said the institute is initially going to train 800 through provision of high quality timber treatment programmes.

“There is a lot of wastage in the Uganda’s timber industry and the timber is poor quality because of the manner in which the timber is managed. Most times when people construct houses, they develop cracks on the walls because the timber warps simply because it was not dried and treated,” Mr Virani said.
