Recession adrenaline – Overworked and living in fear of a layoff? You’re not alone
By JOANNE RICHARD – 22nd September 2009
Excerpt – Recession adrenaline is driving employees to work harder than usual, says Suleman, but it can’t last. Employers can avoid worker disengagement, absenteeism and illness by being proactive now in dealing with recession adrenaline burnout. “It is unlikely the new worker will continue to nod their heads after the economy has recovered.”
Employers wanting to retain their A players need to recognize and reward them for their contributions, says Suleman. Pay cheques don’t drive loyalty or motivation. “A pay cheque compensates the employee for their work but it does not act as recognition or a thank you for the value they bring to the company.”
Suleman, CEO of I Love Rewards, a company providing results-driven reward and recognition solutions, says workers need recognition and to feel valued in order to stay healthy and engaged in this recession driven workforce. “What gets recognized gets repeated, which creates positive behavioural patterns. Creating a culture of recognition in companies means happier employees, less turnover and more productivity.”
