The crisp outline of the Olympic Mountains provided a picture-perfect backdrop at Government House yesterday as Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, presided over a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award ceremony for 68 young people from around the province.
It was Edward’s main appearance during a brief stay in the city, and followed a pair of similar ceremonies held Thursday in Vancouver.

Sisters Hajra and Maryam Bawa, part of a large group of award winners from the Lower Mainland’s Ismaili Youth Group, said Edward had something to say to everyone who crossed the stage.
“He asked how much we enjoyed it, and basically did we get something out of the program, which we really did,” Hajra Bawa said.
Maryam Bawa said Edward’s genial manner helped ease the tension she felt when she walked up for her award.
“You’re really nervous when you get up there, but he’s so friendly.”
Each of the sisters spent two weeks in Central America working at orphanages as part of their award activities.
