Latif Murji’s teachers weren’t surprised to hear the Dr. Norman Bethune Collegiate Institute student had earned a full scholarship given to student leaders – one of only 20 students across the country to receive the honour.
“He was a wonderful candidate so I wasn’t surprised because he should win something like this,” said Andria Natale, one of the teachers who wrote a reference letter on his behalf and the staff advisor of the Student Activity Council.
The SAC is just one of the many groups the Grade 12 student is involved with at school and in the broader community.
With an extra curricular resume that includes being a director of the committee for Personal Social Responsibility, editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, on the executive of the Bethune Environmental Action Team (BEAT) and a member of an improv comedy troupe it’s not difficult to understand why Murji was selected as one of the recipients of the TD Canada Trust scholarship for community leadership.
“I just like being involved,” he said.
“I want to be involved in the community and leave my mark wherever I go.”
