Noruz begins today in Iran, but the thoroughly ecumenical holiday is also celebrated in central Asia and the Caucasus, and among Kurds, Ismailis and Parsees. The majority of the people sprucing up their homes and calling their mothers are Shia Muslims, but Noruz originated as a Zoroastrian holy day.
