Iqbal is a Grade 11 student at West Point Grey Academy in Vancouver. Iqbal captured the following titles: Top Senior Public Speaker, Top Parliamentarian, Top Senior Speaker – Provincial Champion. For more info see here. Iqbal was also a member of Team Canada and was selected to represent Canada at the World Schools Debating Championships held February 9 to 19 in Athens, Greece. At the World Schools Debating Championships, Iqbal ended up among the top 10 in the world. At the World Championships, Iqbal noted his travails on the Team Canada Debate Blog.

Over 150 of the province’s top debaters travelled to Prince George this past weekend to compete at the BC Debate Provincials – Law Foundation Cup. Sponsored by the Law Foundation, each region is allowed to send their top senior, junior and grade 8 debaters to compete annually. The top seniors and juniors advance to the Canadian Senior Nationals and Junior Nationals. West Point Grey sent 7 debaters to the provincials and the results were simply fantastic. On the heels of an incredible performance at the Worlds, as a member of the national team, Iqbal Kassam demonstrated his debate prowess capturing the following titles: Top Senior Public Speaker, Top Parliamentarian, Top Senior Speaker – Provincial Champion. Seniors Jonathan Carson, Helenaz Hajifattahi and Peter McCauley held their own placing 2nd, 3rd and 5th respectively in the Parliamentary division. All four seniors have advanced to the Senior National Championships to be held April 23-27th in Regina, Saskatchewan.
