VANCOUVER – Thousands of Ismaili Muslims from across North America took to the streets of downtown Vancouver Monday evening to welcome their spiritual leader.
Shrieks from the crowd and the wails of the Vancouver Police Department bagpipe band accompanied the Aga Khan’s convey as it rolled up in front of the Pan Pacific hotel.
“It’s very exciting,” said University of B.C. law student Aneez Devji. “It’s a very unique opportunity in the life of an Ismaili.”
The hereditary leader of the world’s 15 million Shia Ismaili Muslims is on his last stop of a cross-Canada tour as part of a Golden Jubilee to mark the 50th anniversary of his reign.
