More than 25,000 people will flock into B.C. Place today to greet the Aga Khan, spiritual leader of the world’s 15 million Ismaili Muslims.
He is on the last leg of his eight-day Canadian tour commemorating his golden jubilee.
Yesterday, red banners flapped above city streets as a small army of volunteers prepared B.C. Place for his visit, and a large, enthusiastic crowd lined downtown Vancouver streets to welcome the arrival of the 71-year-old philanthropist.
“There’s a tremendous amount of excitement and anticipation in the community to meet with His Highness,” said Farid Damji of the Ismaili Council of B.C.
The Aga Khan is scheduled to meet with Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan and Premier Gordon Campbell this morning. Vancouver police Chief Jim Chu will also attend with other local dignitaries.
