Ismaili Youth Volunteering to help plant trees

VANCOUVER, May 30 – CNW

DATE: Sunday, June 1, 2008

LOCATION/TIME: New Brighton Park, Wall Street, Vancouver – 10 A.M.

THE EVENT:

On Sunday, June 1st, local Ismaili youth will put their ethics in action as they partner with The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation in helping to prepare sites and plant 50 fruit trees at New Brighton Park. Commissioner Allan De Genova will plant the first tree with the Ismaili Youth. The benefits of the fruit tree planting activity, which was conceived and facilitated with Parks Board Commissioner Mr. Allan De Genova, will contribute to improving the well-being of our local community and be sustained for decades and generations.

In the spirit of service, the CIVIC program, which stands for “Challenging Ismaili Volunteers In Communities”, has been introduced as a Golden Jubilee youth initiative that will allow youth between the ages of 13 to 25 to become “ambassadors” for the spirit of voluntary service. The CIVIC program provides experiential learning opportunities to allow youth to contribute to the betterment of the societies within which they live. Other activities undertaken by close to 400 youth on Sunday will include removing ivy, removing invasive plant species, and restoring local creeks. The partnering organizations will include The Stanley Park Ecology Society, Lighthouse Park Preservation society, UBC Farm, Evergreen – Chubb Creek,
Byrne Creek Streamkeepers and The City of Vancouver.

“We are very pleased that The Vancouver Board of Parks has been selected as a partner organization for CIVIC” says Commissioner Allan De Genova. “We are grateful for the support of the Ismaili Muslim Youth and look forward to our community and especially those less fortunate enjoying the fruits of this labour for decades.”
