Eboo Patel: The Aga Khan in America

The Pope and the Dalai Lama got all the headlines last week, but they weren’t the only international religious leaders visiting the United States.

The Aga Khan, spiritual leader of the world’s 15 million Ismaili Muslims (the community I belong to; read my piece on the Aga Khan on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his Imamat), was also here.

It was the Aga Khan’s first public visit to America in over two decades. He spent time with his followers in California, Illinois, Texas and Georgia, and met with the governors of each of those states as well.

  1. Opinions continue to fly in full swing regarding His Highness Aga Khan IV and his interpretation of Islam, whose 1.4 billion adherents are not monolithic but the very embodiment of pluralism and diversity: multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, multi-racial, multi-locational and multi-interpretational.

Among other criteria the true worth of a leader in today’s world is how does the leader guide his flock amidst the torrid pace of progress and development in science and technology, how does he expound the humanistic dimension of his religion and translate them into practical and efficient ways to serve and help God’s greatest creation, man himself? With regards to the second criterion much has been written and I refer you to the mammoth Aga Khan Development Network:

Regarding the first criterion above the Aga Khan IV’s vision is entirely based on the literal text of as well as allegories within the noble Quran. To give you an example I put together a series of 72 quotes and speech excerpts of Aga Khan IV, his predecesor Aga Khan III and others relating to the subjects of knowledge, intellect, creation, science and religion, in chronological order from the most recent to the oldest. These little nuggets of information speak volumes about how His Highness Aga Khan IV links human intellect to the practice of faith in the Shia Ismaili Muslim interpretation of Islam, his promotion of creationism within the context of a constant, continuous and dynamic creation and his view of the material universe as being part of the structure of truth, the ultimate nature of which it is the goal of religion to reach under the banner of the fundamental principle of monorealism in a monotheistic Islam:
