The launch saw the laying of a foundation stone for the construction of Early Childhood Development centres in Kilifi, Kinango and Kaloleni districts and involves a contribution of KES 2 million to the Foundation’s Coastal Rural Support Pro-gramme (Kenya) [CRSP(K)] by Kenya Shell Limited.
The partnership reflects the commitment of both agencies to improving educational opportunities for young children from marginalised areas. “The money will be used in the construction of much needed classrooms in nursery schools in various villages,” said Obath.
Mr Shariff of AKF added, “Shell’s contribution will enable CRSP(K) to meet one of its key objectives of providing safe learning environments for young children.
This will help increase student attendance and retention and assist in puffing children on a solid footing when they transition into primary school.”
This new initiative follows the successful implementation of the first phase of the Coast Rural Support Programme (Kenya) which ran from 1997 to 2006.
During the first phase of CRSP(K), the Shell Foundation contributed KES 20 million to the project.
The contribution from Kenya Shell Limited will support the Coastal Rural Support Programme (Kenya) in its long-standing efforts to improve the livelihoods of the rural poor, working with communities to enhance agriculture and livestock production, economic development, productive infrastructure, human and environmental health and child development.

This is an excellent partnership between a public sector commercial organisation and an independent Foundation supporting education and health.
