VANCOUVER, B.C. – More than 500 people took part in the Ismaili Walk For Kids this morning at Lumberman’s Arch in Stanley Park.
The annual event raises money for the United Way of the Lower Mainland’s Success By 6 programs, aimed at helping children get a good start in life.
Over the past five years the walk has raised more than $1.1 million for the program, said Farid Damji, a spokesman for the Ismaili Council for British Columbia.
“It’s just a great community event,” said Damji, adding that the charitable walk is important to Ismailis, who belong to the Shia branch of Islam.
“One of the ethics of Islam is making the world a better place. This walk was started as a form of ethics in action,” Damji said.
The 16-year-old event includes a seven-kilometre walk, a 3.5-kilometre children’s walk, plus a festival with entertainment, food and activities.
Over the years money has been raised for a variety of charities.
Next year’s event will raise money for B.C.’s Women’s Hospital’s research program, said Damji. Damji said, about 3,000 people were expected at the festival throughout the afternoon. For more information, visit www.iwalkforkids.ca.
