Spirit & Life, an exhibition of rare Islamic art and manuscripts never before displayed in the UK, will run from 14 July to 31 August at the The Ismaili Centre, South Kensington, London. Organised by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, Spirit & Life will present treasures from the permanent collection of the Aga Khan Museum, which will open in Toronto, Canada, in 2010. The museum, an initiative of His Highness the Aga Khan, (Spiritual Leader) of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims, is dedicated to the presentation of Muslim arts and culture in all their historic, cultural and geographical diversity.

There is a well-known saying: ‘A picture is worth a thousand words’. In the case of artifacts to be featured in the forthcoming Aga Khan Museum a picture, a calligraphic exposition, a three-dimensional craft or an entire rare original text are worth many more than a thousand words. They can allow us to use our imaginations to transport ourselves to past Muslim civilizations to catch a glimpse of how people lived, learned and displayed their culture and intellect. I suspect also that the West is hungering to see first hand Islam’s finest expressions.
