Corporate Social Responsibility – Going Beyond Business

Karachi

Speaking at a conference on “Corporate Social Responsibility — Going Beyond Business,” Tanvir Ahmed Sheikh reminded the participants that Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) requires that corporate sectors continue performing their duties as an ethical entity that endeavours to raise the quality of life of the society, in addition to gaining profits from their business ventures.

Sheikh, who is President of The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), was addressing representatives of the corporate sector at a local hotel on Wednesday. The conference was jointly organised by Aga Khan Health Service, Pakistan and Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST).

Sheikh advised that the corporate sector should retain their humane side, engage in the community and development work instead of being concerned about fixing the prices and profits all the time. “Environmental and social considerations are the essence of the CSR and they should not be sidelined at any time.

Social Development Responsibilities have been transferred from the governmental sectors to the corporate sectors and it is our duty to provide diversified help to the community,” he added.

Shahid Saleem, CEO of Intertek Labs talked on ‘Empowering the Customers-the other end of CSR’ and admitted that CSR in corporate sector is inefficient and self-centered. “The businesses should not forget that thinking and acting for personal benefits, disregarding the welfare of the customers is unethical and harmful in the long run,” he warned the top echelons of the corporate sectors.
