Aga Khan Academy Junior School’s students, parents and faculty celebrated at the ‘Drums for Peace’ gathering with numerous other schools at their amphitheatre on Wednesday 21st March.

Ngoma za Amani Mombasa was the culminating event of a campaign to raise awareness of the problems of violence in our society.

A steering committee consisting of faculty from the Aga Khan Academy organised a poetry contest to support the World Poetry – Childhood Day initiative based in Belgium.

Twenty schools were invited to participate and students were encouraged to hunt for words that build peace in their homes, schools and community.

The children then wrote poetry as a means of expressing their thoughts and feelings about the problems of violence and the need for peace.

Over 500 students participated in this contest and 69 poems were submitted to be judged.

On the 21st March the children joined thousands of others around the world to beat the Drums for Peace and the winners of the poetry contest shared their work.

Municipal Education Officer, Mr. Twahir attended the well-received event and enjoyed the children’s poetry, dance and song presentations.
