
Rashida Khakoo, who began her medical career at Uganda’s only medical school, has been honored with her second West Virginia civil rights award in as many months.
She was one of 14 West Virginia civil rights leaders who received the Governor’s Civil Rights Day Award from Gov. Joe Manchin at a luncheon Thursday in Charleston.
Khakoo joined the infectious disease section at West Virginia University in 1976 and is now its chief.
She has served as the U.S. Chairman of the Aga Khan Foundation National Committee, which oversees health education in developing regions including in Asia and East Africa, among many other volunteer roles and honors.
In January, Khakoo was awarded the 2007 “Living the Dream” Sharing of Self Award from the West Virginia Martin Luther King. Jr. Holiday Commission.
