Expert discusses urinary problems
KARACHI: The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) Karachi held a lecture on common urological problems and their surge in females, which was presented by Dr Nuzhat Faruqui, Instructor of Urology at the Aga Khan University and Fellow of the European Board of Urology.
The lecture discussed the common problems, indicators, types of incontinence, factors associated with bladder control problems, myths, treatment strategies, behaviour modifications that help control and prevent the disease, need of surgery and the pathophysiology associated with the disease.
The health expert emphasised that symptoms like leakage of urine in any amount while coughing, laughing, sneezing, or standing, blood in urine, retention of urine, severe constipation, should not be ignored and the patients must seek advice from their physicians. In early stages, the disease could be cured by preventing certain lifestyle traits, like evening fluid intake, certain exercises, and mild medication. The treatment is not even expensive and is easily accessible too.
From 10 to 60 per cent women, between age group of middle to elderly, report urinary incontinence and that mainly owes to urinary tract infection, unhealthy lifestyle and restricted mobility. Urine should be passed every time when the need is felt and should not be held unnecessarily. Causes also include cancers of kidney, bladder and adrenal glands.
The PMA House also announced opening of its Reading Room. The room can accommodate 25 students at a time and is air-conditioned.
