Mahmud Visram’s family owns the SUN N SAND BEACH RESORT, a 5 star, 600 bed beach hotel situated on the North Coast of Mombasa, Kenya, overlooking the Indian Ocean, since 1971 when they came to this rural area and started the hotel with 14 rooms, which has now grown into a major tourist facility in Kenya.
Over the years, Visram family has embarked on a number of initiatives to assist the local community (approx 20,000) living around the hotel which has improved their economic and social standards.
Some of the projects are –
a. building of a mosque
b. building and running a nursery school
c. building and running a primary health clinic
d. providing of fresh drinking water free of charge to the community from the municipal source when available
e. supporting a Govt run Primary school in the area comprising of 2100 students.

c. Ufadhili award for East Africa for community service
d. Kenya Hotelkeepers Association award for Community Social responsibilty
e. Most recently, First choice Holidays (UK’s leading Touroperator), for sustainable tourism
In addition, SUN N SAND BEACH RESORT has partnered with MICROSOFT CONSORTIUM to provide the Kikambala Primary school with e-learning facilities, which is the first of it’s kind in Africa, which was officially opened in August 2006, by H.E The President of Kenya, Hon Mwai Kibaki.
