Aga Khan Documentation Center Program Head Sharon C. Smith worked with the Municipality of Baghdad to choose images of works designed by Iraqi architect Mohamed Saleh Makiya (1914-2015) that will be used on postage stamps in Iraq. The images included plans, drawings, and photographs selected from the extensive archive that Makiya donated to AKDC@MIT in 2012.
The 1000 dinar stamp ($0.84) includes a photograph of the architect foregrounded against an image of one of his earliest major works, the Khulafa Mosque in Baghdad. It was issued alongside a 750 dinar stamp honoring the recently deceased architect Zaha Hadid.
