- KANGAROO CARE GOOD FOR BUBS
It’s easy and costs nothing for new parents and gives infants the best start to life. PhD student Zohra Lassi, from the University of Adelaide’s Robinson Research Institute, found “kangaroo care”, where a baby spends large amounts of time nestled skin-to-skin on a parent, is a key factor in helping newborns thrive.
Skin-to-skin contact promoted breastfeeding and early recognition of danger signs and illness in babies. A review of more than 60 reproductive, maternal, newborn and child interventions found kangaroo care was one of six significant interventions to benefit babies, including an early start to breast feeding and hygienic umbilical cord care.
